Short History of Auto car Manufacturing

Auto-Car manufacturing journey in 20th century

Everyone will need a car because it makes life easier in the future. Till now the need and demand of the car had been in a limited country, but now the demand will be there for the whole world, because man likes to upgrade himself with time.

It is necessary to upgrade, so along with this, auto industries will also be upgraded.
We will see the advanced form of the car in the future which will be different from today’s car.
People will use cars, but many people will know about the history of cars.
With this article, I have tried to tell about the history of the car, which you will like.

Over time, the car changed very fast, there were many experiments about cars, all wanted to make a better car than the other, in which some were successful and some failed.
Today, you will find the cheapest car in the market and in the same market you will get the most expensive car. Each kind of car has different customers.

Every car manufacturer does mass production, so that they can make and sell as many cars as possible, in every country the need of the car is according to the work, if the work is more then the car will be more on roads.

Big Three makes the most cars in Michigan (USA).

The world will move towards electric cars, in which Tesla motor is working better, and other companies will also move towards electric vehicle.

Today is 2020 and all the companies in the world have established themselves in a much better way and every company is doing a better job in their country whether it is Maruti or Kia Motor.

Birth year of modern car is 1886, when Germen inventor Karl Benz made Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Then in 1894 he made Benz Velo. So Europe introduced the world with car.

In  1893 Automobiles were on road in England. There were law about Automobile related operation on road called “Flag law”. But under “Emancipation run” organized by Evelyn Henry Ellis  this law was not only braked but also challenged legal speed limit (12MPH) in England.
Around 1903, British Automotive industry were established like-Rolls-Royce, Bentley, MG, Triumph and Jaguar.

History of cars in US is confusing. During same period Frank and Charles Duryea successfully drove a single stoke car through the street of  Massachusetts in 1893. So it is regarded as first operation of automobile in US. Although automobile production in US is debated topic. Some historians says Automobile was produced in 1897.

General public’s reaction also ranged great curiosity among automakers. Public reaction was –How power will be generate? (by steam, by gasoline, Electric); How will be transmission –electric, chained and Friction? If the choice was gasoline, should it be air cooled or water cooled? Engine will be four stoke or two stoke?

So in the beginning of 20th century automobile production was started, but on mass production level. Ransom olds began production of Curved dash olds in 1901 and it was truly first successful vehicle in United state.

Henry Leland is founder of Cadillac.  In 1903 first Cadillac was madeRunabout and Tonneau. There were problem with engine starter, it was manually. But later convert it with electric starter, this innovation earn him Dewar Trophy in 1908.

Around 1908, many automobile company started manufacturing cars.  Buick, Cadillac, Olds motor works were some popular company were making cars, but not on mass production level. Some became successful and some failed to gain popularity.

Around 1908 Henry Ford established mass production system in USA. First Ford car was Model T.
Henry Ford introduced concept of magneto assembly in 1913 at Ford highland park plant, Michigan (USA). This was seismic shift in mobility that really put the world on wheels (Source-CAR and DRIVER).

What was magneto Assembly?

It was a moving assembly line to make magneto. Assemblies part were moved on conveyor by series of operation done by a workers and forwarded to next worker on same conveyor.
Same concept was used to assemble complete car on moving assembly line.

In 1904 Buick Motor company was started, by William Crapo Durant non Automaker businessman. He try to buy Ford motor company in 1908. William C Durant want to control several automaker into one corporation. In 1909 he gained Cadillac as well as he also gained control of several automaker like Olds motor (Oldsmobiles) works and he gave single name for these bunch of companies-That is General Motors.

William C Durant once again try to buy Ford Motor , but deal was cancelled because Bank did not awarded the loan of 2 million dollar. And he was criticized  by Board of directors of GM over his policies for company.

In 1911 Louis Chevrolet meat William C Durant and they form Chevrolet motor company. Basically they want to produce the car on mass production level- First Chevrolet car was Chevrolet 490.

In 1915 this car Challenged dominance of Model T in mass production.
William C Durant offer Chevrolet company to be part of GM by taking stokes shares in GM.
Finally he became the boss of GM again. Now GM company was controlling Buick Motor, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Oakland and Chevrolet.
Lot of experiments were being done in 1920 in engine modification, like V16 engine was assembled In Cadillac car. Up to this time most vehicle were open topped. People show more interest in closed car. In 1930 great depression came, which put automaker on survival mode, many automaker did not survive in that depression.

Soon after world war 2 happened in 1939, and ended in 1944.
In world war 2, almost all auto manufacturing factories were target in Europe. But American automaker were safe  from bombs. Not single auto firm was targeted.

But during world war 2 America did not make cars, but switched automaker in wartime material production.
So Auto production was halted for almost 4 years in USA. During that period they upgrade their technology and in 1946 US automaker start selling updated CARS.

In 1950 it was found USA leading the world in auto sector. Huge demands of cars, spurred the enormous growth in USA economy.

In 1950 more car was designed with better roof, and breaking system and tailfins, which created interest  in consumer to buy the car.
In 1953 GM made Chevrolet Corvette, which became America’s first racing car.

But public craze for tailfins car become low when Cadillac bring 62 series car (6th Gen), in 1959.

These 6th generation car were upgraded with 7.0 liter (265 cubic inch- V8 engine) with 180HP. Around 1963 almost each automaker upgraded their engine to 430 cubic inch-400HP engine. SAE made engine test standard around that period.

After 1960 focused was being done for automotive safety. Standards were made for vehicle safety by USA government, which help them to avoid maximum accident.
Cars were imported in US by other countries like Britain, Japan. Toyota was already manufacturing car in USA since 1958. In 1970 fuel prices raised and people was searching for more fuel efficient car rather than those car which were being manufactured in Detroit. So they move to Imported Cars, those cars were actually good in fuel efficiency as well as in safety.
Japanese based Toyota cars were good in these quality, so they rely on Japanese cars.

Well here Toyota was not good from starting (form 1958), Toyota cars were poor in quality. But they improved their process by using concepts of Edwards Deming (Who gave the concept of SPC, PDCA cycle). By using Deming’s method Toyota build lean production system. Around same period almost each  automaker established mass production system.

Many Japanese automaker were now working in USA, like Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Thus US automaker faced serious challenged from these companies.

Many reforms were being done by USA government, under those reforms they build broad and straight roads between cities (By Interstate Highway system-1950).
Their was another reason behind these broad highways to evacuate city easily if majors cities are targeted by bombs.
So far 3 major companies established and were known by Big Three in USA.
Major changes or improvement done in technology during that time, which give more power to auto sectors. By the end of the 1980s Carburetor was replaced with electronically fuel injection system.

After this change automaker increase uses of digital electronic devices to control maximum functioning of car. With the help of Digital computer control automaker became able to install safety devices like- ABS, Airbags.

Around 1965 every car manufacturer had a 426 or 427 cubic inch engine in their option list. Those vehicle were used for racing.  But now not all car have such engine displacement, like mass production company Maruti Suzuki manufacture S-Cross with engine displacement only 1250 CC which is very small as compare to 1965 engines. So car which are cheap and are being used as daily commuter, will have around 800-1000 CC engine.

1 cubic inch = 16.38 cubic centimetre

Some interesting Fact

Toyota Prius was most economical electric vehicle in USA. This car is first Hybrid Electric vehicle. This car was also criticized for other aspects as well. But it was mostly used by top socially respected individuals. It was second most successful electric car after GM first electric car in USA.

But first electric vehicle was manufactured by General Motors in 1998 (Vauxhall-EV1). This vehicle worked on Lead-Acid batteries, with 16.2kwh battery capacity.

Conclusion

As the time changed need of car also changed. Along with this technology and car shape also changed. But one thing that makes today’s car different with vintage cars, that is use of material. Today’s cars are more compact and use to manufacture on mass production line. Vintage car were made with experiment to obtain maximum engine power, But today’s car are made according to human requirement.
